ACHLECK - 200 YEARS OF HISTORY

Torloisk Estate grew significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries as agriculture improved and the kelp industry reached its height. The McLeans invested in roads, schools, a sawmill and a small harbour pier. The need to house estate workers led to the creation of the hamlet of Achleck, centred around Torloisk Farm, a farm manager's house and the sawmill.

2 and 3 Achleck cottages date from this period. These are traditional 19th century stone cottages built from local basalt volcanic rock with slate roofs. The cottages have now been tastefully restored, preserving their original exteriors while providing the contemporary comforts expected of modern self-catering holiday accommodation.
